queens welcomes me!
|
so the big move happened on the 15th. July 15.
i rented a uhaul van to get me to my new apt in queens. i was called 2 days before and told to be there at 8am. I show up and they say nothing until 9am. ok, great. so i wait around for an hour in harlem until the lady who can give me the keys shows up.
i bring the van to 78th street, but of course there's no parking. being a nice guy, i want to make sure other people can drive by the stupid narrow street. so i park under a sign that says "no standing anytime mon-fri 10pm-4am"
apparently you can't stand there AT ALL in the small hours during the week. so whatever, i'll park there.
and i got a $115 ticket for parking in a no standing zone.
grrrrrr
so i'm lugging all this stuff into the van. and losing all my energy going up and down and up and down these stupid stairs. damn the stairs! get in the van and drive to queens.
driving on the queensboro bridge was fun/a little scary. i somehow took some turn and got onto the bridge via a little side-bridge lane. like all the other cars were on the bridge, and i was on the outskirts of the bridge, next to the water. very very narrow was the ride. i have video i will post. yes... i was taking video and driving a van on a narrow bridge...
moving IN was no problem. my new puerto rican roommate and his dominican wife and kid were not there until the evening. at which point little miguel (4 y/o) wants to play "hombre arana" and i'm supposed to pretend i'm getting killed.
i spend all sunday laying down area rugs and setting up the computer area. everything is strewn about and i only have that up. tomorrow i will continue setting stuff up.
WRONG
a rain storm sweeps by (not a big one, mind you) and knocks out my power. there's only one 7-train running now. so now i have no power and another rain sweeps in. a big rain that leaves everything muggy. no fun staying at an apt with no power.
might as well too becuase i have a HEAP of work to do at heavy melody. all the voice-over was messed-up by out illustrious VO-director. we had to re-record many characters by ourselves and edit it all and try to make sense of all the papers that were given to us. meanwhile Franck (the french game developer for NWN2) is asking us (in mediocre english) about why there is dialogue missing and why these characters are speaking to themselves ect.
four 13-hour days and gallons of coffee later, the VO stuff is re-recorded, edited, effects-processed, and properly named. but, i still have no power.
con edison has no idea what's wrong and are saying that if you don't have power, you should call them because they don't know who does/doesn't.
so i'm in the dark, nothing has been unpacked since, and having some caffiene withdrawl.

Congrats on your move. I don't envy moving alone in NYC, but at least you are done. Keep up the blogging once you get your power back! We love to hear from you.
