a man, a camera, and a blizzard
|
 so there was a blizzard up in nyc. not just any blizzard, mind you, but what they call "thundersnow". i, personally, think they made that word up. but the principal of it is snow storm+thunderstorm=lots of snow. we were supposed to get anywhere between 6"-12", a lot of snow. what we got was actually twice that. i did think it was strange to have lightning and thunder in a snow storm. i wondered if that affected anything at all or if there was danger. nah, there are other things to strike before it would decide to hit me.
i decided beforehand that i'd go to central park and take snow pics. i'd been in snow before and thought it would look pretty. gotta get there early, though, coz i don't want people treading on the nice fluffy snow before i can snap some pics.
i didn't know that when i walked outside i was looking at 20" of snow. i'm not that experienced. there weren't really any cars save for a trickle of taxis driving about as fast as i can run.  running, i found out, is easier than walking. i guess its because you can really get on top of the snow. and the street is better to walk on than the sidewalk because there are more tire tracks. here's a person with the same idea i had. walk in the street early morning and take a snapshot or two. what this person did that i SHOULD have done is get an umbrella. after all, snow is water, and when it warms it might as well have been rain. most of the pics you'll see are kinda blurry. that's the snow. it got all over my face and i couldn't really look up or i'd have a eyefull of snow. the good news is that if you stick out your tongue you get a tonguefull of s now =D. not really tasty i guess but still fun. in fact if you scoop up a mound of snow and put it in your mouth you can pretend you're eating a snowcone. just a very tasteless one.
here's a pic of park avenue, where normally you'd be able to see the met life building beakoning at the end (around 53rd st). no met life building, no cars, just snow and the silence of nothing moving. peacefull all except that its cold out and you are trying to get about in 20" of snow. i found out that trying to walk in that takes a lot out of you. i mean besides the fact that i hate mornings, i'd say its 40% more work moving through snow. now central park is quiet enough on a normal day. in fact you can forget you're in a big city when you're meandering through and the city loses itself behind the trees. but somehow it seemed even more quiet. as in all i could hear was my jacket. excellent recording conditions except for the snow getting everything wet. i didn't spend long in central park. i felt the fatigue creeping in. the kind where you need to keep moving to keep your body heat up, but you're too tired to keep moving. a good hot coc ao woulda done the trick but where am i sposed to get that ? the guy was out there playing with his dog. they were having a grand old time. the dog was mostly curious about me taking pics though when i came by. maybe he was confused on why someone else would be out here if they're not playing in the snow. so after a feeble attempt at making a snow-angel i went back to my apartment. i didn't really have the resolve to take as many pics as i had planned because i was tired and it was a lot more snow than i can prepared for. if/when it snows again i'll have to bring an umbrella or something.  |

I've been waiting since last night to hear your impressions of the snow storm. I LOVE the photos. You need to invest in the reusable handwarmers like Steve and I had. Guess if we were smart and thoughtful, we would have left you at least one.

Holy Canoni, Those pics are awesome!!! To bad you got tired... I'd have loved to see more (easy to say when I've got my windows open cause it's a nice day out). I'm glad you got to experience the blizzard... sounds like fun (for awhile).
Next time it snows, eat a hearty breakfast and get that camera going (mush mush mush, I say).

the snowman was just outside grand central station, on one of the concrete buffers by the street. it was about 6:30am the next day so the snow had stopped. i guess since everyone seems to like the pics i'll put the little bit of video footage i have up soon.

Yeah....I feel like I was there too, only I'm nice and warm. Oh no I'm not, it is actually COLD here 24 degrees.
The snow is beautiful on the first day. It's all the days after that it gets all icky, black and just miserable. Hope it warms up soon for you!
